The Cavins Model ‘G’ Combination Gas Anchor and Desander is a conventional “Poor Boy” gas separator with a desander on the bottom. Of the three models of gas separators Cavins offers for sucker rod pumps, this one is designed for the lowest range of fluid and gas rates. The Cavins “Sandtrap” Desander Sub separates solids from the fluid, which settle by gravity into joints of tubing run on the bottom of the work string as a mud anchor. The clean fluid, free of most solids and gas bubbles, flows up to the sucker rod pump. The Desander Sub is optionally equipped with a funnel for extra-fine solid separation. A funnel is recommended when your well produces any kind of fine, flour, or sugar type of sand (i.e. fine formation sand, iron sulfide, etc.). The Model ‘G’ separates gas and solids before either can enter the downhole pump. It is typically 20 feet long, though it can be custom built to your specifications. When ordering the tool, it is advised to inform Cavins of the dimensions of the previously used “Poor Boy” gas anchors in the well. In addition, the pump rate will be used to properly size sand spirals.
